Hull and East Yorkshire (HEY) Children's University are looking for a friendly, positive and self motivated person with a love of reading and who loves working with children to join our amazing charity. We have a vibrant, energetic and hard working team who all share a passion for changing children's lives.
The new Letterbox Club Tutor will join our current team of three Letterbox Tutors. They will provide Children in Care in the East Riding (year 3 to year 6) with one-to -one reading sessions that over time improve their reading ability, showing tangible improvement in reading age measured by regular assessments. They will visit the children in their schools on a regular basis, delivering their bespoke Letterbox Parcels that contain books, games and equipment to improve their reading, maths and literacy.
A full clean driving license is required for this role and for vehicle insurance purposes, candidates must be aged 25 or over.
An essential responsibility for this role will be taking on our vintage 1969 VW camper that has been transformed into a reading classroom for sessions to take place in. The successful candidate will be required to drive the van to and from schools and utilise the space for delivering the sessions. The van has been upgraded to ensure the safety of the driver and is fitted with CCTV to protect the child and adult delivering the sessions.
Please note that driving the van will be part of the interview process. We would like to stress that you must be a confident driver to take on this role. Although the van has been refurbished and upgraded, it is still a vintage vehicle and is very different to driving a modern vehicle. This role involves lots of travel and not very much time in the main office so it would be suited to someone who is happy to work independently for much of the time.
This job is term time only however occasionally during school holidays the Letterbox Coordinator will be required to support the learning experiences that HEY Children's University provides to the Children in Care. This may mean some out of hours and weekend work (though plenty of notice will be given).
The successful candidate will either be a Qualified Teacher or a Level 3 + Teaching Assistant with at least a year's experience in carrying out reading assessments with primary school aged children. Some experience in working with Children in Care is desirable.
Due to this role requiring regular travelling, a full clean UK driving license and the use of own car is essential as well as being able to drive the VW van.
As this job involves working with children and young people, the successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced disclosure DBS check. They must also provide two references, one being from the manager at their current or most recent place of employment.
HEY Children's University is an inclusive employer and we welcome applications from all backgrounds.
To apply please send your CV and a covering letter to Amy Mercer, Senior Letterbox Coordinator a.mercer@hull.ac.uk
Applications without a covering letter will not be considered. Please state that you are applying for the EAST RIDING Letterbox role.
