What our volunteers have to say
‘My volunteering life began with Samaritans over ten years ago with my first big volunteering event at London 2012 which I will never forget. Hull City of Culture 2017 came next followed by HEYCU in 2019. I still do all 3 regularly because I enjoy them all and they together, give me variety.
I don’t have a favourite HEYCU experience - every one is different because of the children and their reactions to it, even if you do the same experience regularly.
I volunteer because I want to give something back; I love my city and love to share it with others and help them to see the amazing heritage of trawling, ambassadors, architecture and so much more.
I love it when a shy, nervous child who has never been away from home before can be helped to tick off lots of 1sts - going away without adults from home, going on a train, seeing London and it’s many sights, going on a boat on the river cruise, going on the tubes, eyeing things they’ve only seen on the tv before and so much more.
We can certainly ‘write it large’ - we broaden children's horizons, we open their eyes, we show them the outside world and it’s possibilities! It is important and it is so very worthwhile.
It makes me really, really proud to be a part of it.'
Sue recently won our HEYCU Special Recognition award for her dedication to our charity as a volunteer.
