Step Up Move On

Step Up Move On is designed to support a small group of young people with care experience throughout their secondary education to help build confidence, self-esteem and support them to achieve their future aspirations.

Step Up Move On is designed to support a small group of children with care experience throughout their secondary and higher education to help build confidence, self-esteem and support them to achieve their future aspirations.

Students are referred on to the programme by our Letterbox Coordinators, CLA Primary Programme, the Virtual School Team, or their educational setting.  We aim to tailor each session to help the young people on the programme to consider trying new experiences and inspire them to discover new opportunities.  In addition, they can receive nurturing support, meet new people, and have fun.

The aim is for approximately 12 young people to begin the programme in Year 7 and attend four sessions a year:

  1. A day at the University of Hull experiencing taster lectures, fun workshops and a day in the life of a university student;

  2. A day at another college or educational establishment (For example: Bishop Burton, ER College, Wilberforce college) to discover the subject choices on offer

  3. An industry or career experience day with one of our many close contacts in the business world.

  4. A well-being experience to help the group make friends and develop team building skills.

Each academic year, the students then move up through the programme, developing new strengths and skills to help support their studies and well-being.  In year 10 the programme begins to focus more on individual interests, and we offer more bespoke industry or work experience opportunities.   When the young people reach Year 11, they receive support to help them on their chosen college or career pathways.  Once they have left school the students are able to have the opportunity to mentor the younger children and will continue to receive our support with their transition to university and beyond if so required.

The young people will also get invited to a plethora of other opportunities with a chance to make friends and have fun on our trips to Flamborough or Welton Waters, London trips, theatre visits and lots of other creative days out over the summer.
