Tina came across our charity by accident when she was travelling on a train from Hull to London in 2024:
‘I had the pleasure of being in the same carriage as a group from HEYCU, it was so lovely to see and feel the excitement of the children and I wanted to find out more.’
She didn’t really know what to expect when first starting volunteering with us, but threw herself into the role, embracing meeting new people and facing new situations. After doing the initial Volunteer Training for the schools team, Tina decided to also join our volunteers who support our CLA Experiences. Instead of full classes of children like on our school experiences, these are smaller groups of children who often go on visits with us multiple times a year, throughout their time at primary and secondary. Our volunteers for CLA & SUMO enjoy getting to know the children over time and love watching them grow:
‘Spending time with the children on the CLA programme, I can really see them develop in confidence and gain so many new skills and personally it is rewarding and a privilege to feel part of their development journey.’
Tina volunteers for us more now than when she first joined us, despite being an active volunteer for East Riding Council Voices that Influence and a volunteer at her local GP practice. We find that the flexibility of our volunteering allows people to support many causes and not feel like they have to pick one to dedicate all their time to.
‘The more experiences I go on the more I get out of it, so glad I joined!’
